Bab el-Mandeb

Bab el-Mandeb is the strait between the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. Every ship using the Suez Canal route also transits Bab el-Mandeb, so attacks or instability here push traffic onto the far longer Cape of Good Hope route.
